Expose in Linux using Compiz

December 9th, 2007

I love Expose. It’s one of Apple’s greatest contributions to the computing world. I use it on Vista with Switcher for Windows. After some playing around with Compiz-Fusion on Ubuntu 7.10, I was able to get Expose working in Linux! Here are the steps to make it work:

  1. Go to System | Preferences | Advanced Desktop Effects Settings
  2. Go to the Windows Management section and load “Scale” (View Screenshot)
  3. Go to the “Actions” tab and double-click either “Initiate Window Picker” (includes windows on the current desktop only) or “Initiate Window Picker for All Windows” (includes windows on all desktops)
  4. Now you can set whatever shortcut you want to use. I prefer using the Top Left screen edge, ala OSX. Choose whatever you prefer and click “OK”.
  5. If you would like to customize the feature at all, go back to the General tab and play with the options until you’re satisfied.

That’s it! I hope you enjoy! Here’s a screenshot of what it looks like. Beautiful, isn’t it?
